1,158,758. Riveting. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. 3 April, 1967 [16 May, 1966], No. 15053/67. Heading B3U. [Also in Division B2] A method of coating the abutting surfaces between a fastener and a hole in a workpiece in which the fastener is to be secured, comprises the steps of placing a rupturable membrane carrying a mass of coating material over the hole, inserting the fastener into the hole causing it to penetrate through the membrane and the mass of coating material so as to transfer the coating material to the said abutting surfaces. In Fig. 1 the workpiece 10 consists of two metal plates 12 and 14 supported on a work bed 16, which is part of an automatic fastener inserting machine 18. The workpiece is provided with a fastener hole 20 which is shaped to receive a rivet 22. The mass of coating material 24 is carried on the carrier means 26 which is supported on pairs of sprocket wheels such as 36 and 38 which are rotatably mounted in the framework of the machine 18. The wheel 36 is intermittently driven by suitable driving means 40 so that the coating material 24 is carried in juxtaposition relative to the fastener hole 20. A fastener insertion machine 18 also includes suitable fastener delivery means 42 which is effective to position the rivet by the ram 44 operatively connected to the driving means 40. As the ram ascends the rivet 22 is carried downwardly, punctures the membrane and the coating material is thereby carried into engagement with the film surfaces of a fastener hole 20. |
