1,158,447. Making magnetic heads. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 21 June, 1967 [23 June, 1966], No. 28665/67. Heading G5R. Magnetic heads are manufactured by: (a) forming a rigid body of magnetizable material from parts 1, 2 having smooth surfaces 3, 4 between which glass or other gap-forming material 5 is disposed and each having at least one recess 6, 7 intersecting the surfaces 3, 4 at sharp edges 17, 18 arranged parallel to and opposite one another by means of a locating member 8; (b) rotating the body about the axis 13 of a mandrel 12 located such that the edges 17, 18 are parallel to, and equidistant from, the axis, and grinding the operational faces 10 to roundness and the gaps to the desired depth; (c) removing the mandrel, cutting the body into individual or groups of polepiece units and adding shunts and coils to complete the head. The mandrel may pass through the body or may be divided longitudinally to clamp the body between its parts (Fig. 4, not shown). A multi-track head having one read and one write gap per track is similarly manufactured, three pieces (17-19), (Fig. 7, not shown) forming the body which is subsequently grooved and filled with non-magnetic material 27 to separate the gaps, then ground and cut along lines 31, 32. |
