Adhesion between a substrate and a substantially molten plastics film is promoted by oxidizing the bonding surface of the film shortly before application to the substrate by means of an electric discharge between two adjacent electrodes both positioned on the same side of the film so that the discharge acts upon the bonding surface of the film but has negligible effect on the substrate. The substrate may be pre-treated by surface cleansing, heat or flame treatment, or oxidation. In the Figure, the surface of the plastics film 7 is oxidized by extruding the film past an electrode 4 which is an aluminium rod or metal wire and an earthed rotatable electrode 5 comprising an aluminium or iron pipe 10 and insulation 11. Alternatively the electrode 5 may be a glass rod surrounding a metal core or may be replaced by an electrode of the type 4. The film is then laminated with one or two substrates 6, 8 by means of a rubber roller 2 and cooling roller 3. Electrodes 4, 5 may be placed on both sides of the film to oxidize both surfaces thereof. The discharge may be movable to sweep over the film surface. Adhesion may be further promoted by situating the electrodes in an atmosphere of high oxygen content.
