The grille comprises bars forming a rake (1) retaining flotsam at the inlet to a turbine or sewage-treatment plant. The barrier surface is formed by unwinding or unfolding strip material (2) of panels hinging together, upstream of the rake, and held against it by water pressure so as to form a seal. The seal can be formed by a sheet, a textile mat, or successive slats flexibly joined together, and typically of plastics. There can be a driven cleaning rake fixed near one edge of the strip (2), and the strip and rake can be moved into position from the top downwards.
