DISPLAY DEVICE AND ITS PRODUCTION

PURPOSE:To decrease image defects and to decrease the fluctuations in display characteristics between respective pixels by forming insulating layers of two- terminal elements of thin films of zinc sulfide. CONSTITUTION:Scanning lines 2 and first electrodes 2a branched from these scanning lines 2 are formed on a base substrate 1 having an insulating characteristic. The thin film of the zinc sulfide (ZnS film) 3 is formed over the entire surface of the substrate covering the scanning lines 2 and the first electrodes 2a. Square picture element electrodes 5 of a rectangular shape corresponding to the shape of the respective first electrodes 2a are formed in contact with the ZnS film 3 along the scanning lines 2. Each of the respective picture element electrodes 5 has one bulged part and these bulged parts of the picture element electrodes 5 intersect with the terminal parts of the first electrodes 2a to which the respective picture element electrodes 5 correspond. The parts where the terminal parts of the first electrodes 2a, the ZnS film 3 and the bulged parts of the picture element electrodes 5 are laminated in a perpendicular direction constitute the two-terminal elements. Further, an oriented film 9 is formed over the entire surface of the base substrate 1 covering the picture element electrodes 5 on the ZnS film 3.
