Silicon nitride ceramic heater (1) comprises a silicon nitride ceramic sintered body (2) and a heating element (3) enclosed in the body. The element (3) contains a carbide, nitride or silicide of W, Mo, Re, Cr, Ti, Ta, Ni or Co, and not more than 75 vol.% BN having an average grain dia. of not more than 18 mu m in combination with the main component. An alternative silicon nitride heater is also claimed.
