<p>PURPOSE:To obtain an alcohol by bringing an olefin such as ethylene or propylene into contact with water in the presence of a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A reaction vessel is charged with, as raw materials, water and an olefin such as ethylene or propylene followed by reaction in the presence of a solid heterogeneous catalyst prepared by dispersing a heteropoly-acid in a silica gel produced by hydrolysis of a silicon alkoxide, thus obtaining an alcohol corresponding to the olefin. The above catalyst is thermally stable, and its use causes little corrosion of the apparatuses or equipment involved in the reaction.</p> |
