An engraving cutter with a replaceable tip (16) has an elongate cylindrical shank (14) with a first end for coupling to a drive source which imparts to the shank portion rotational motion about its central axis and a second end with a conically tapered recess (38) in it. The recess is located substantially coaxially with the axis of the shank portion (14). The cutter has an elongated tip portion (16) which is at least partially cylindrical and which has a first cutting end (36) for contacting an object to be engraved and an opposite second end having a conical taper (40) on it of a size and shape to be frictionally and removeably received in the conically tapered recess in the shank portion such that rotational movement of the shank portion (14) causes corresponding rotational movement of the tip portion (16). The tip portion is of a material different from the material of the shank portion (14).
