Process for coating an aluminium or steel substrate

Aluminium or steel sheets are coated by physical vapour-phase deposition with zinc and manganese. During this process, the zinc component is provided by thermal sources, whereas the manganese component is produced in particular by arc discharge sources. A description is also given of a process suitable for series production, in which the sheet metal runs through working zones (dry-etching station, coating zone and aftertreatment zone) which are lined up in a row and are shielded from the surrounding area.
