1,152,509. Polar petroleum resins. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 28 July, 1967 [8 Aug., 1966], No. 34860/67. Heading C3P. Petroleum resins containing a polar group are made by reacting the resin with an unsaturated fatty acid at 200-320‹ C. in an inert atmosphere at a pressure not greater than standard. The petroleum resin may be a thermoplastic resin obtained by polymerizing, at 0-70‹ C., in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, e.g. AlCl 3 , of steam-cracked petroleum distillates (e.g. naphtha) of b.p. 30-280‹ C., or it may be obtained by thermal polymerization of steamcracked distillates of b.p. 30-280‹ C. at a pressure of 10-30 atmospheres. The fatty acid may be linoleic, linolenic or oleostearic acid or may be a fatty acid from linseed, soya, safflower, dehydrated castor oil, fish oil or tall oil. |
