Vibration damper comprising a piston which is connected to a piston rod and is arranged in an axially moveable manner in a cylinder and subdivides the cylinder interior, filled with damping fluid, into two working chambers which are connected to one another by means of damping valves of the piston, while provided at the lower end of the cylinder is a bottom valve which, together with a piston-rod guide, centres and fastens the cylinder in a container, there being a compensation chamber between the cylinder and container, which compensation chamber is in connection with the lower working chamber via the bottom valve, the lower working chamber exhibiting at least one throttle section as hydraulic pressure stop, which throttle section takes effect as from a specific retraction stroke position via a piston-side or piston-rod-side component, and the hydraulic pressure stop is in operative connection with a changeover valve (15) which closes upon retraction into the pressure stop and opens with the extension movement.
