Using the installation, an, in particular, insulating and refractory coating can be applied in one or more layers onto a surface, for example the interior of a metallurgical container. The installation comprises a storage vessel (silo) (1) which contains a stripper (13), which can be rotated about a vertical axis, and the storage vessel contains, in its lower region, a chamber which is connected, via openings, to the interior of the storage vessel (1) and of a tubular body (2) for delivering to a spraying nozzle (7) the material which is to be applied.
