The invention relates to a catalyst for the purification of the exhaust gases of a lean-mixture engine such as a diesel engine, the exhaust gases containing sulfur dioxide derived from the fuel, the catalyst comprising a body having numerous through-flow conduits for exhaust gas, a support having a large surface area on the surface of the body, and catalytically active substances on the surface of the support. The catalyst according to the invention comprises a combination in which the support comprises a mixture of alumina and lanthanum oxide and the catalytically active substances comprise both platinum and palladium.
