A composite yarn 20 for use in a papermaker's fabric 10, for the press section of a papermaking or similar machine, is disclosed. The composite yarn 20 includes a core 24 substantially surrounded by a layer of monofilaments 26. The core is at least partially soluble. On the other hand, the monofilament layer is non-soluble and is either braided, knitted, or helically wound around the core. After the base fabric, woven from the composite yarns, has been needled, the soluble portion of the core is washed out, supplying an increase in void volume to the finished fabric.
