The invention relates to a mixture formation and combustion process for a diesel internal combustion engine, which has at least one cylinder unit (1) with a cylinder liner (2) and a piston (3) tightly guided therein, together with a cylinder head (4) closing off the cylinder liner (2), the cylinder liner (2), the piston (3) and the cylinder head (4) defining a compression chamber, in which the combustion air is compressed and into which fuel is introduced in the area of the compression dead centre. The object of the invention is to create a diesel engine combustion process which, whilst maintaining the low fuel consumption, decisively reduces the soot and nitrogen oxide emissions and the noise emission from the diesel engine. The object is achieved in that a part of the compressed, hot air is separated and cooled in the compression chamber and the fuel is injected into the cooled air, where it is vaporised and, with the cooled air, forms a homogeneous, knock-resistant mixture, a small proportion of which is brought into contact and mixed with the hot air from the compression chamber, being ignited and burnt in the process. <IMAGE>
