PROCESS FOR PRODUCING SPONGE IRON BRIQUETTES FROM FINE ORE

The invention relates to a process for producing sponge iron briquettes from fine ore with a maximum grain size of less than 2 mm, preferably smaller than 0.5 mm, wherein hot fine ore is fed to a roller press having two press rollers and is briquetted into sponge iron briquettes in the nip between the press rollers by the latter's mutually opposite briquette molds. The direct pressing of fine ore into sponge iron briquettes is largely unknown in the prior art. The invention proposes that one of the press rollers be operated as a loose roller that can be moved essentially perpendicular to the roller axis, the nip being adjusted according to the amount of material fed to the press rollers and thereby having the requisite mean width to produce a string of briquettes. Compared to a previous process, the process as per the invention provides for a markedly increased service life of the press molds.
