The present invention relates to a liquid crystal unit and projection display which uses the liquid crystal unit as light modulator or light valve. One object of the present invention consists in designing a projection display of high colour quality by using liquid crystal units without polarisers. According to the invention, the projection display has: a light source (12); an optical colour-splitting system (colour-analysing system) which splits light emitted from a light source (12) into a plurality of optical paths; an optical colour construction system (colour build-up system) which constructs light, which passes through light-modulating elements (15, 15a, 15b, 15c; 77), to form a light, preferably along a single optical path; a multiplicity of light-modulating elements (15a, 15b, 15c; 77), in which each element is arranged in an optical path between the optical colour-splitting system and the optical colour construction system; a phase means (17) for producing a phase difference of approximately one half of a wavelength between a light which enters the phase means (17) and a light which leaves, the phase means (17) being accommodated in a first optical path in which the first optical path comprises an optical path along which light emitted by the light source (12) is reflected by the optical colour-splitting system and is reflected by the optical colour construction system, or an optical path along which a ... by the light source (12)...
