1277704 Sealing fastener assembly; joint making packing FEDERAL SCREW WORKS 1 Jan 1971 [9 Feb 1970] 125/71 Headings F2B and F2H A fastener assembly includes a threaded nut 26 or screw (64) having an annular flange 30 coaxial with and radially outward of the thread 28 and with a seat 32, and a synthetic plastics seal 12, e.g. of polyethylene, having an annular sealing portion 14 and a collar or retainer portion 16 snap fitted over the flange to hold the seal in position, the portion 14 being deformable radially inwardly by the seat 32 and a recess 36 therein into sealing relationship with the external thread of a co-operating screw (as in Fig. 6) or of the screw itself upon tightening of the nut or screw respectively against an abutment surface 42 to provide a fluid-tight seal in opening 46. The portion 14 may be severed by the seat during tightening and the outer part 48 of the seal discarded (as in Fig. 6) or retained by an undercut chamfer (56) on the flange as in Fig. 8 (not shown). If the seal is used with a screwhead, as in Figs. 9 and 10 part of the sealing portion may be thick and designed to be extruded from between the flange and the abutment surface to provide a visual indication of the proper tightening of the screw.
