To remove acid components, such as mercaptans, from liquid hydrocarbons, such as light oil fraction, a stream of hydrocarbon (2, 3) and a stream of an aqueous alkali solution (4, 5) are fed either side of a porous membrane, the pores of which are not wetted by one of the two phases hydrocarbons/alkali solution.
