The invention describes the preparation of materials for the delayed release of antimicrobially active substances, resulting in a reduced exposure of objects which are in contact with the materials to antimicrobially active substances and carrier material components, and, on the other hand, an improvement with regard to the long-term availability of the active substances. The delayed release of active substance is achieved by incorporating the active substances into a diffusion-inhibiting metal oxide matrix, for example by sol/gel technology or by co-evaporation. Advantageous applications are the preservation of foodstuffs and the disinfection of any desired object.
