A separating device on a carding machine or cleaner for textile fibres such as cotton or similar fibres, which has an opening 17 for the exit of air containing short fibres, waste provided in the covering 15 of a roller 5 (e.g. a clothed or needle roller). An air gap 18 for admission of air is provided upstream of opening 17 in the direction opposite to the direction of rotation of roller 5. Admission of air is effected in the direction onto roller 5 and the exit of air is effected away from roller 5. In order to improve the separation of short fibres as well as waste, and to allow gentle separation of the short fibres from the fibre fleece, an external means (roll 14) for generating the incoming air current that flows through gap 18 is associated with rollerS. A stripping edge 20 with a suction hood is associated with gap 17. The gap between rollers 5 and 14 is adjustable. The roll 14 may be connected to a variable drive and control. A covering 15 may have a plural exit openings 17a, 17b each with an air gap 18a, 18b. <IMAGE>
