Programmable payment cards which are connected to an electronic memory and an input unit, in which the payment cards (1) are permanently connected to an electronic memory (2), in which the payment cards (1) are releaseably connected to an input unit (3), in which the input unit (3) contains a keypad (4) and a payment key (7), in which a purchase amount is preprogrammed by means of the keypad (4), in which the payment card (1) is programmed by means of the payment key (7) via the electronic memory (2), in which the purchase amount appears continuously and in a correctly documented manner on a display (8) on the payment card (1), in which the inscription on the display (8) is generated by electrophysical effects, and in which the inscription is fixed to the cover sheet of the payment card (1) by chemical/physical reactions. <IMAGE>
