PURPOSE: To provide a method for efficiently storing file data in the disk storage device of a data processing system. CONSTITUTION: File data are stored in a disk 16 as many different displays. The file data are stored as a flow for obtaining any of the many different displays. In each flow, flow descriptors describing how the flow is stored in the disk are combined. The above display includes the storage of the flows in a single extent, the storage of the flows in many extents, and the storage of the flows in the related flow descriptors.
