PURPOSE:To provide an efficient method for activating a catalyst for phthalic anhydride production by treating the catalyst for activation by air in specified conditions. CONSTITUTION:A catalyst for producing phthalic anhydride by the gas-phase oxidation of naphthalene in a fluidized bed which is deteriorated after a stationary reaction, especially a catalyst of vanadium pentoxide - potassium sulfate - cesium sulfate - silica, is treated for activation. In the activation process, the air temperature is raised by 10-100 deg.C higher than that in the stationary reaction, the air supply expressed by space velocity is adjusted at 10 100% of that in the stationary reaction, and the treatment time is 5-50hr. The activation is not effected when the conditions are deviated from the above ranges. The incorporation of 0.05-1.0vol.% of sulfur dioxide or benzothiophene into supplied air in the activation improves clearly the yield of phthalic anhydride in the stationary reaction. Since this activation method can be applied to an existent phthalic anhydride production facility, the operations are simple and suitable for industrial implementation.
|
