Filter cloths 28 are mounted on bars 32 which are urged by respective springs 36 upwards away from the tops of press plates 14. As each plate is moved away from the remaining plates a mechanism engages cams on its bar 32 to shake the cloths and remove the cake. In Fig. 2 the mechanism comprises sawtooth formations 40 on the plate-moving carriage, which engage inclined cams 38 on the moving plate to stretch and release alternately the cloths 28 thereon. Formations 40 may be replaced by spaced rollers (Figs. 8 and 9). Alternatively such spaced rollers may be mounted on the press frame rather than on the moving carriage. During return of the carriage, the cloths are not shaken. This is achieved by raising the carriage or mounting the rollers on pivoted brackets. <IMAGE>
