The invention relates to an exhaust gas cleaning apparatus having a main catalyst and an electrically heated additional catalyst. The additional catalyst can be arranged in the exhaust gas stream either upstream or downstream of the main catalyst. By means of a hydrocarbon adsorber introduced into the exhaust gas stream upstream of the additional catalyst, the heating power required for the heating catalyst in the cold-start phase can be decreased.
