PURPOSE:To reduce the peak value of discharge current by forming a face discharging electrode pair in such a manner that the dimension of the discharge gap is gradually changed in the extending direction. CONSTITUTION:An electrode pair 12 consisting of display electrodes X, Y is formed in such a manner that the dimension of a discharge gap (g) which is the clearance between the electrodes is gradually changed in the extending direction (line direction). Namely, the electrode pair is provided so as to be extended from the left to the right in the drawing symmetrically to an indicated line L. In a face discharge type plasma display panel(PDP) 1 having such a constitution, the generation of face discharge is successively delayed as the discharge gap is increased. Namely, the voltage range of causing the face discharge is wide, and the starting period of face discharge in each unit light emitting area is shifted. Therefore, in the electrode pair 12, the discharge current is carried in the form of being dispersed timewise, and the peak value of the discharge current is minimized. Thus, the load of a driving system can be reduced.
