Method for the modification of a polysaccharide derivative characterized in that at least one polysaccharide derivative is subjected to a carboxyalkylation phase. The polysaccharide has; either a DE (dextrose equivalent) less than approximately 5, preferably at most equal to approximately 3, or a DE at least equal to approximately 5, said polysaccharide derivative having undergone hydrogenation before the carboxyalkylation phase.
