A device comprising at least one blade (11) extending transversely relative to the forward direction (F1) of a slab (1), and substantially tangentially movable in said direction relative to the lower slab surface (4), a movable sensor (13) arrangeable in a stand-by position on the path of the slab so that it may be actuated by a front surface (2) of the moving slab, and means (12, 14, 15) for moving the blades out of a position in which they are upstream from the sensor relative to said forward direction (F1), at a speed greater than that of the slab, when said slab moves the sensor. The device is particularly useful for trimming the front ends of slabs between a reheating furnace and a break-down mill in a hot rolling mill.
