PURPOSE:To prevent fluctuation in thickness of the cell between substrates. CONSTITUTION:This element consists of a pair of substrates 11a, 11b having electrodes facing to each other and a chiralsmectic liquid crystal 15 between these electrodes. The element includes an effective optical modulating region 4a, 4b and a peripheral region 3a, 3b around the region 4a, 4b. The pretilt angle alpha2 of the liquid crystal molecule in the peripheral region 3a, 3b is larger than the pretilt angle alpha1 in the effective optical modulating region 4a 4b. Threreby, the peripheral area having a larger pretilt angle prevents the liquid crystal molecules from becoming high density. |
