The invention relates to a process for the preparation of 2,4-pyridinedicarboxylic acid, in which a) isonicotinic acid is oxidised to isonicotinic acid N-oxide, b) isonicotinic acid N-oxide is converted in the presence of an alkylating agent to an N-alkoxyisonicotinic acid salt, c) the salt is converted to 2-cyanoisonicotinic acid by an alkali metal cyanide in aqueous solution and d) 2,4-pyridinedicarboxylic acid is obtained in highly pure form from this product by hydrolysis and subsequent pH adjustment to a pH in the range from 1 to 4.
