INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE AND DETECTING METHOD OF STATE OF ON-BOARD FUEL INJECTION DEVICE

PURPOSE: To provide an on-board diagnostic system for detecting impaired fuel injectors in an internal combustion engine in operating the engine. CONSTITUTION: A fuel injector control means 20 is provided for individually actuating fuel injectors 11-16 operatively connected to a fuel passage 24. Pressure sensor means 34 are provided in the fuel passage 24 for sensing transient fuel pressure waves resulting from actuation of the individual fuel injectors 11-16. Signal processing means 37 are provided for processing pressure signals from the pressure sensor means 34. The output signal from the signal processing means 34 corresponds to the fuel flow rate passing through the fuel passage 24. Such output signal can be used to alert an engine operator to an impaired fuel injector and/or can be provided for the fuel injector control means 20 for adjusting the duration of the injector actuation to achieve a desired fuel flow rate per individual actuation.
