The ventilation device (V) comprises a casing (1) intended to be fixed on a wall (8) of the fireplace, this casing comprising a suction mouth (3) communicating with a heat recovery device volume, and an outlet (6) for distributing hot air towards the outside; a fan (12) is arranged in the casing inside an envelope (13) which is open at two ends (14, 15). An electric motor (9) for driving the fan (12) is arranged with its axis (A) essentially vertical in the bottom part of the casing (1) at a level lower than that of the suction mouth (3); the fan (12) is of the centrifugal type with its axis vertical and is arranged above the motor (9) between the two end openings (14, 15) of the envelope (13) which comprises a frontal opening situated opposite a middle zone (6a) of the outlet (6) of the casing, this outlet (6) comprising an upper zone (6b) and a lower zone (6c) respectively above and below the envelope (13) while a vertical passage (17) exists at the rear between the envelope (13) and a wall (2) of the casing so that a bypass trajectory (18), essentially in the shape of a U lying horizontally, surrounds the envelope (13), the electric motor (9) being placed in the lower horizontal branch (19) of this bypass trajectory. <IMAGE>
