Computer system and method for problem solving

A parallel search method for a parallel processing computer uses different and competing search procedures to search for a data group. A search problem is formulated by a data management application (12). The competing search procedures are produced on the basis of the formulation of the search problem and already existing rules. The competing procedures are executed by a first and a second problem element (16, 18). In addition, the execution of the competing search procedures can be monitored by an arbitration element (14) in order to obtain information about the efficacy of the competing procedures, and the competing procedures can be changed on the basis of the information. In the event of search applications in which a time restriction is necessary, a timer (8) is started at the beginning of the execution and a solution is returned to the data management application (12).
