The invention relates to conveyors on the paternoster principle for picking up and dispensing articles (14, 15, 17), such as pieces of timber (14, 15, 17) cut to size, which can be dispensed via the conveyor to a further-processing apparatus (21, 22). The conveyor possesses a plurality of upward-directed successively arranged lifting trains (1, 2, 3), each consisting of a frame (4, 4') which has at least two upper and two lower rotatably mounted wheels (6, 7) or, in each case, a roller, about which chains (8, 8', 18) or belts spaced from one another and running parallel to one another are looped endlessly, at least one wheel (6, 7) or one roller being capable of being motor-driven, and a plurality of storage compartments (9, 9', 10, 10', 19) which are fastened to the chains (8, 8', 18) or belts and which are open outwards for picking up the articles (14, 15, 17) horizontally and are capable of rotating, together with the articles, around the wheels (6, 7) or rollers in the manner of a paternoster. Arranged between every two adjacent lifting trains (1, 2, 3) is at least one transfer device (13, 16, 20) in each case which travels between the chains (8, 8', 18) or belts and which is capable of transferring the articles (14, 15, 17) transversely out of a storage compartment (9, 9', 10, 10', 19) of one lifting train into a storage compartment (9, 9', 10, 10', 19) of the adjacent lifting train. <IMAGE>
