The invention concerns arylidene-4-oxo-2-thioxo-3-thiazolidine carboxylic acids of general formula (I) in which R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5, which may be the same of different, are, independently of each other, a hydrogen atom, a C1-C6 alkyl group, a hydroxy group, a C1-C6 acyloxy group, a C1-C6 alkoxy group, an oxyalkyl acid group with 1 to 4 C-atoms or a benzyloxy group, whereby either the benzyloxy group may be substituted by a group X (X being hydrogen, a hydroxy group, a C1-C4 alkyl group, a C1-C4 alkoxy group or a benzyloxy group) or the phenyl group of the benzyloxy group is condensed with a methylenedioxy or ethylenedioxy group, or R2 and R3 together form a methylenedioxy or ethylenedioxy group ; R6 is a hydrogen atom or a C1-C4 alkyl group ; and A is either a straight-chain or branched-chain C1-C8 alkyl group or a >CH(R7) group in which R7 is a straight-chain or branched-chain alkyl group, an aryl group an arylalkyl group, a heteroalkyl group or a carboxyalkyl group. Compounds of formula (I) are suitable for use in the prophylaxis and treatment of late effects of diabetes as well as the prophylaxis and treatment of atherosclerosis and arteriosclerosis. |
