The separation of heavier particles containing metals from an ore in a slurry of water is effected by passing the slurry over a series of trays so as to generate in the slurry both electrostatic and centrifugal forces which can be combined to separate the heavier metal particles from the remaining ore. Each tray has a plurality of small rectangular cells formed in the upwardly facing surface thereof, each cell being generally square with a closed bottom and a swirl chamber formed at the bottom of the cell. The slurry entering the cell swirls around within the cell around a horizontal axis so as to generate high centrifugal forces due to the small dimensions of the cell. Electrostatic charges generated in the slurry act to attract the metal to the insulated base of the cells. The trays are arranged in stepped arrangement at an angle to the slurry flow so that the material enters the open top of the cell at a slight downward angle relative to the top surface of the cell.
