An isolated DNA sequence (I), encoding an enzyme with cyclosporin synthetase-like activity, is new. Also claimed are: (1) a recombinant vector contg. (I); (2) a host cell carrying the vector of (1); and (3) a process for producing cyclosporin or a deriv. by cultivating a host cell and causing it to produce the protein prod. (I) includes either the 2890 bp sal I restriction fragment contg. sequences 40239 to 43129 of the sequence given (seq ID1) or it includes the 2482bp SalI restriction fragment contg. sequences 37781 to 40244 of seq. ID1, or hybridisable sequences.
