A chair is provided having a blow molded back rest (13) and a mechanism (20) which permits the back rest to pivot rearwardly and to be vertically adjusted. The mechanism has a carrier block (22) slidably engaging vertical slots (32) in a support member for vertical adjustment movement. The back rest is operatively attached to the carrier block so that the back rest can move in the vertical direction in unison with the carrier block or pivot rearwardly. The carrier block (22) has a curved integral spring (38) which engages the rear of the back rest to bias the back rest forward and to regulate the rearward pivoting motion as the user reclines. A handle (30) and latch member are pivotably connected to the carrier block to secure the attached back rest and carrier block in the desired vertical position. |
