A cam shaft (3) serving to actuate intake and exhaust valves of an internal combustion engine is fitted with cams (8, 9) which can be displaced axially from an activated condition (cam 8), in which they are connected rotationally to the cam shaft (3), into a deactivated condition (cam 9) using moments exerted by the respective valve-closing spring (26, 30) on the cam (8, 9) in its descending phase. To ensure a defined circumferential position of the deactivated cam (9) use is made of a spring (33), the said spring connecting it to an associated annular piston (14) in the circumferential direction, in conjunction with a fixed stop (31) which engages in a recess (32) in the annular piston (14) only when the latter is in its deactivation position (Figure 2). <IMAGE>
