PURPOSE:To produce the steel wire excellent in strength, toughness and corrosion resistance by subjecting steel in which C, Si, Mn, P, S, Al, Cu and Cr are specified to wire drawing and thereafter executing wet wire drawing using intermediate and finishing dies under prescribed conditions. CONSTITUTION:Steel having a compsn. contg., by weight, 0.85 to 1.05% C, 0.1 to 0.5% Si, 0.15 to 0.6% Mn, <=0.02% P, <=0.02% S, 0.003% Al, 0.05 to 0.2% Cu and 0.05 to 0.6% Cr, and the balance Fe or the like and satisfying (Cr%+Si%)/Cu%; 1 to 4 is melted. The rolled stock of this steel is subjected to wire drawing, final heat treatment or the like and is thereafter subjected to wet wire drawing. In this working process, a finishing die 4 and an intermediate die 3 arranged on the upstream side are immersed in lubricating oil F, and the wire drawing is executed. Then, the finishing die 4 is divided into a primary die 4a and a secondary die 4b, and the reduction rate of area of the finishing die 4 is regulated to 4 to 10%, the wire diameter to <=0.35mm and its tensile strength to >=2910-1275XLog (wire diameter mm) (N/mm<2>).
