The netting is divided into individual net sections (1, 2, 3). Each net section (1, 2, 3) is connected at its upper edge to an upper tensioning rope (cable) (4) and at the lower edge to a lower tensioning rope (5). These tensioning ropes (4, 5) are held in respective rope pull-braking elements (8, 9) firmly connected to a support (7). In the event of material falling down, only that net section is deflected and only those retaining ropes are moved in their rope pull-braking elements which is or are actually subjected to the impact energy of the falling-down material. Neighbouring structures are not stressed. Through the subdivision into individual net sections which are held independently of the neighbouring tensioning ropes, maintenance work needs to be carried out only in those structures which are present at those points where an impact of the falling-down material has taken place, since neighbouring structures are not influenced by the energy to be dissipated. <IMAGE>
