PURPOSE:To recognize a character with high precission from the image data of the character even when the difference of a density level generates in the character part and the display state of the character is bad. CONSTITUTION:This device is provided with a camera 10 photographing a character 'LJ183' on a product P, a frame memory 12 storing photographed image data, a character segment part 14 segmenting the reading object character as a rectangular character area every character from the image data, a mesh division part 16 dividing the character area into longitudinal and lateral meshes, a density calculation part 18 calculating each representative density value of each mesh in the character area, a density correction part 20 equally correcting the density value of the mesh of the character part for the mesh column in a horizontal direction, a density vector expression part 22 expressing a character pattern by a density vector where the density value of each mesh after a correction is defined as an element and a character decision part 24 deciding the name of the character of the character pattern. |
