The invention relates to a safety device for preventing a ladder (1) designed to be rested against a metal structure (2) from toppling over. This device comprises a magnetised block (4) which is able to adhere via a principal face to a flat surface of the said structure and which is pivotably connected to the ladder by two arms (6) connected together by a rod placed inside a hollow rung (3) of the ladder. The block comprises an eccentric cam (10) which is actuated by pulling on a cord (11) in order to detach the block, and pivot stops (8) which are able to limit the downward pivoting action of the detached block by bearing against the uprights (9) of the ladder. <IMAGE>
