PURPOSE:To prevent the damage of an ion exchange membrane due to the pulsation of a gas-liquid mixed phase flow in a vertical electrolyzer unit equipped with the ion exchange membrane by constituting gas-liquid separating chambers at both the electrode parts in a specified form. CONSTITUTION:In a vertical electrolyzer for brime electrolysis 4 where an anode chamber and a cathode chamber are divided by an ion exchange membrane, an anodic side diaphragm 2 is constituted of metal, such as Fe, Ta and Zr, which is not damaged by gaseous Cl2 and a cathodic side diaphragm 3 is constituted of Fe, Ni, stainless steel plate, etc., which are not made brittle. To anionic side projection parts 6 which both the disphragms 2, 3 are fitted to each other to form, an anode 9 is fitted, and to cathodic side projection part 8 a cathode 10 is fitted, and also above the electrolyzer 4, gas-liquid separating chambers 11 which are formed of a member integrated to the diaphragms 2, 3 and contain gas, such as Cl2 and H2 generated by the electrolysis of electrolyte are provided. The cross sectional area of the chamber cut by the cross section perpendicular to the passage to its discharge port is made larger at a part near the discharge port than at a part far from the discharge port. Thus, the damage of the ion exchange membrane dividing the cathode chamber and the anode chamber due to pulsation on a gal-liquid mixed phase flow going toward the discharge ports is prevented. |
