A folding laminated map (10) with an improved hinge (15a) is described. The map (10) is separated into two or more discrete panels (11a) and printed on a single sheet of stock. The space (12) between panels (11a) is a blank area on the printed sheet which will be come the hinge (15a). Slots (13) are cut from the blank area on the printed sheet in such a way as to leave connecting tabs (12) between adjacent panels. After the slots (13) are cut out of the hinge portion of the printed sheet, the sheet is passed through a laminating device with the hinge (15a) parallel to the direction of travel through the laminator. Becau se the slots (13) are so narrow, the sheets of laminatin g film on the top and bottom of the printed sheet trap air within the slots (13). The trapped air serves to reduce friction in the hinge and e xtend the durability of the map.
