An inverter for powering an electroluminescent lamp has a direct current supply terminal (61), a ground terminal (62), and a single output terminal (63). A high frequency pumping circuit (71, 72) stores electrical energy in an inductor (88) having a first terminal (86) and a second terminal (87). A switching circuit (73, 74) alternately connects the first and second terminals of the inductor to the output terminal at a low frequency. The output from the inverter is a high voltage, low frequency, alternating current. |
