Technical problem of the invention: Different individuals from among a limited, known group are to be identified on the basis of physical characteristics by an automatic method for another automatic system (e.g. check-out, access control unit) without the use of keys, code words or other codes. Solution to the problem or achievement of the technical object: Because of their individual, spatial distribution pattern of organs and organ parts (e.g. veins) and the resultant distribution patterns on a quasi-anatomical cross-section as the result of the magnetic resonance imaging, cross-sections of body parts, obtained by magnetic resonance imaging, are suitable for identifying the carrier. By automatically comparing the data with electronically stored data of the registered group of individuals obtained at an earlier point in time, the individuals in question are unambiguously identified.
