In order to be able to fit a wire end sleeve in a fully automatically operating working cycle to a lead end (30) which has been stripped in advance, the wire end sleeves being intended to be taken from a magazine (34), the lead end (30) is pushed against a stop (37) which is advantageously at the same time an initiating device of an initiating sensor (35) for the working cycle. The completely inserted lead end (30) is initially fixed with the aid of a gripping device (41). The insulation of the lead end is then cut through at a predetermined point by means of a number of blades (55). Subsquently, the cut-off insulation end is pushed so far in the direction of the free lead end, by displacing the number of blades (55) with the cutting blades (56 and 57) closed, that the cut-off insulation end is entirely drawn downwards. The foremost wire end sleeve (93) in the magazine (34) is then pushed onto the free lead end, with the aid of a joining device. Finally, the wire end sleeve is permanently deformed with the aid of a crimping tool (55, 56), as a result of which it is permanently connected to the wire or to the braid of the cable.
