An exhaust gas 4 which comes, for example, from a wood-drying installation is purified in a washer 1 by means of washing liquid 9 circulated in the circuit 8. Washing liquid laden with washed-out pollutants is fed via a branch line 10 to an evaporation container 12 which is provided with a heating device 15. The pollutants accumulate in high concentration in the liquid thickened in the evaporation container 12 and can be eliminated with the thickened liquid via a discharge line 13. The arising steam is fed to a condenser 19 via a compressor 23 in order to be returned into the circuit 8 via a return line 18. A partial flow 30 of the steam condensate can likewise be drawn off in particular if the washing-liquid volume increases through condensate from the exhaust gas 4. The heat of condensation from the condenser 19 can be used for the evaporation of the washing liquid in the evaporator 12. <IMAGE>
